AI search optimization, also called generative engine optimization, or GEO, is the work of getting your business named, cited, and recommended inside AI-powered answers. Instead of optimizing only for a ranked list of links, you optimize to be the source an AI tool quotes when someone asks it a question. The destinations that matter are ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews (the AI summary at the top of many searches), and Perplexity, plus the voice assistants people already use every day: Alexa, Siri, and Google Assistant.
Mechanically, these tools work differently from a classic search results page. They read the web, identify the entities and facts that answer a question, weigh which sources are trustworthy, and synthesize a single conversational reply, often naming just one to three businesses. There is no page two to fall back to. Either the AI considers you a credible answer to that question, or your competitor gets named and you never know the conversation happened.
GEO is how you earn that credibility on purpose. It comes down to three things working together: machine-readable structure (clean schema, an llms.txt file, well-formed content) so AI can actually parse what you offer; conversational, answer-shaped content that maps to the real questions people ask; and authority signals, consistent citations and mentions across the web, that tell the AI you are a safe business to recommend. Get those right and you move from invisible to quotable.
It also covers voice search, which is really the same problem in a different package. When someone asks Siri or Google Assistant for a recommendation, the assistant wants one clean, spoken-friendly answer. FAQ and Speakable schema, plus content written the way people actually phrase questions out loud, are what let your business be that answer.
Here is the honest part about why this matters now. AI-assisted search behavior is rising fast, and a real cluster of Michigan AI and GEO searches, on the order of 130 a month today and growing, is emerging as businesses and buyers look for who does this work. That is forward-looking, not a finished gold rush, and we will not pretend otherwise. But the foundation you build now is exactly what compounds as the behavior keeps growing, which is why the right time to start is before your competitors do.
